This is something I wanted to experience for quite a few weeks after reading about, long exposure . Armed with my tripod and my neutral density 8 filter I went on Bate Island, a small island in the middle of the Ottawa River, to take some photos of a winter sunset. I guess it is like everything else, you need to practice and try different thing to get that silky look for the water. For the first two shots I was able to get 2,5 and 6 seconds of exposure with the lens I had. I should be able to get even longer exposure with my other lens that I left at home (doh). This will give me an excuse to go back.
The last two photos were taken on a frozen section of the river, so no long exposure there.
